Written - end of 1988
This is a tale very much influenced by roleplay gaming during my
final year at University. In particular, the name of the race is
borrowed from a roleplaying system, the land they live in is based
on a campaign setting I'd created, and one of the characters is a
non-player character from that campaign. I occasionally use his name
as an alias even now.
This story was written as a part work which I mailed out to my
colleagues at my first job. They made encouraging noises (or it may
have just been indigestion - the canteen wasn't very good), so I
carried on. Anyway, the text is as it was sent out via VMS mail all
those years ago (except with some typoes amended).
The writing style varies
quite drastically from installment to installment. This is partly
because I was experimenting, partly because I was trying to vary the
structure to maintain interest, but mainly because I got bored at the
end and wanted to finish it off.
