Samuel's Third Upheaval

The current state of play is:

• Simes: Cockfosters, utilising Samuel's Third Upheaval. A great man. (move #1)
• Saggy: Victoria. The coach station link should keep things moving. (move #2)
• Eristophanes: Victoria. Heavy traffic. (move #3)
• Simes: Victoria. Burst water main brings traffic to a standstill. (move #4)
• Simon: Victoria. Fire engines arrive to pump away excess water. Water board fixes pipe. (move #5)
• Rob: Victoria. Flat tyre on the front offside after reversing over damaged Water Board manhole cover. (move #6)
• Steve: BZZZZZZZT..... Surely the last Victoria is not a plausible or possible move because of the utilisation of Samuels third upheaval in the first move. This as everyone know means that BR interchange stations do not remain valid after being played more than 4 times regardless of the circumstances (move #7)
• Jonathan: (after a bit of research)...well, you are half right. The Samuels Third Upheval only blocks the fifth mainline station where all four previous stations are different. However, Rob's move falls down due to the somewhat shaky coach station link upon which it relies (the coach station being a good ten minutes walk from the tube line). A quick consultation of the rules shows this move to be illegal under Vol 23 Ch.4 rule 46.4a. Simple really. (move #8)
• Simes: This is quite true, however it IS permissable providing it is immediately followed by a transversal from the Circle to District lines, as per Samuel's Fifteenth Grabbing. The District must be wild, and the Circle bemused, of course. (move #9)
• Kev: Forgive me if I'm overlooking the obvious, but I can't see any moves that would fit both categories. From Victoria, the two states would seem to be mutually exclusive. (move #10)
• Steve: Defintiely Kev, therefore obs' move must be declared invalid and someone make the next move please. (move #11)
• Simes: An easy escape from this situation (and I'm disgusted nobody else noticed it; amateurs) is to apply Bartholomew's Lever, moving to Putney Bridge. (move #12)
• Jonathan: Bartholemew's lever? It is good to see some of the old classics coming back into popularity. I will respond with that hard old workhorse, Constantine's Shunt. (move #13)
• Jonathan: Fulham Broadway (straight outta' brompton) (move #14)
• Simon: Ah, yes, Constantine's Shunt. Good to see that again. I must, of course, reply with the old Entwhistle Triple-Axel Diablo. (move #15)
• Simon: Regent's Park. (move #16)
• Kev: Alperton, continuing the Diablo manoeuvre. An old favourite of mine as well, that one. (move #17)
• Jonathan: They don't make them like they used to, do they? (move #18)
• Steve: They certainly don't, Royal Oak (move #19)
• Kev: South Kensington (move #20)
• Duncan R.: Mudchute (Surely you remember that the Triple-Axel Diablo enables a Docklands Light Railway semi-shunt?) (move #21)
• Saggy: Dollis Hill. (The obvious response to Kev's unslitting attempt.) (move #22)
• Duncan R.: Island Gardens (Use of Wild Station does not render T-A D DLR s-s invalid) (move #23)
• Kev: East Putney, then. (move #24)
• Eristophanes: After an unslitting attempt in a game involing any variety of Diab(o)lo move, there are a number of possible options. Despite this, I choose Turnpike Lane. (move #25)
• Saggy: Burnt Oak (the only response to Steve and Eristo). (move #26)
• Steve: Obviously everyone's on to me therefore: Bond Street, get out of that one (move #27)
• Kev: [thinks] Er. There you have me. I can't see a way out of that at all, not with the Diablo rules still in play. Am I overlooking something? (move #28)
• Steve: Most definitely and it's not MC (move #29)
• Kev: [shrugs] I give up. I would have said "Back to Burnt Oak", but the Diablo enforces a continual forward motion. Spill the beans, Steve. (move #30)
• Jonathan: Well, I am thoroughly bogged down here. Pass. (move #31)
• Steve: It's noy my go but I'll give you a tip. Check Becks' coefficient and make sure you're not moving anti-clockwise or South of the river. (move #32)
• Kev: [maps it out] That'd give us Shoreditch or Wapping, but they're both on the East London line and thus blocked by the Diablo. As far as I can see, anyway. Put us out of our misery, Steve. (move #33)
• Eristophanes: It's not Bethnal Green is it Steve? It really can't be , can it? No. (move #34)
• Steve: Wel.. I'd have to have a judges ruling. Further clues, look at the past seven moves in detailand check your definition of Triple-Axel Diablo. There was a slight misprint in the 1994 rules. See the erratum slip, regarding page 334 Vol 6. I'm sure this is the only explanation of why you can't see it. erhaps I should get Alison along, I'm sure she'd see it in a flash. (move #35)
• Duncan R.: You seem to be ignoring the benefits the DLR double semi-shunt brings to the Diablo situation. Limehouse (move #36)
• Saggy: Ahhh. I get it. It's too late now for Kev, though. Stockwell. (That's my move, I mean.) (move #37)

• Simes: Quickly now, preserve this momentum before we all get bogged down again. Cockfosters. Quite literally the end of the line. (move #39)
• Kev: Only quite literally? Hmm. Richmond. (move #40)
• Alasdiar: Nice, very nice. I assume St. Pancras is now possible? (move #41)

• Sagggy: (Winner's Comments) : Thanks, Duncan. Once the Diablo was decapitated, the funneling was straightforward. By the way, if I'd played ST. Pancras andEristophanes had responded with Homerton, it would force Mornington Crescent on the next move. I mean wou (move #44)
• Steve: Comments: You can't really thank Duncan, it was the only possible move in the circumstances. If you want to thank anyone try ourself for that inspired move to burnt oak. Effectively winding up the game. (move #45)
• Jonathan: It certainly did. Don't overlook the rather fortunate collapse on the central line though. (move #46)
