Golly, that was a rough week - pulling together enough mental energy to write this has been tough since we've been getting insufficient sleep with sick children. Anyway...
I wanted to come back to editing.
Something I touched on before was that editing is a process of revision of a manuscript, but that there are many components to that process:
1 - internal consistency (call this continuity if you like)
2 - grammar and spelling
3 - freshness and economy
4 - consistency with the themes and characters
Of those, I am good at (1) and (2) but the others are less conscious: any freshness and economy I find in my writing is usually there on first draft, and I have a terrible habit of larding themes on top of my stories until they collapse under the weight.
But that's five minutes.
