January 31, 2009 Titles

Thank you to Mitchell for the suggestion on titles - I will give this post a title once I am done.

Actually, titles are interesting. I always used to think of the title for a story first and then busk it around things like plot and characters. "The Manx Connection" is a really good example of this, a story that was going to be a private investigator story but managed to keep fantasy elements out of the plot for only three paragraphs.

"The Vampire Hunter" is another one, although the genesis for that story was a dream of a classified ad. The story is currently called "Eye Teeth", for thematic reasons as much as anything, although mostly because I think it is a cool title.

So following the practice of putting a title to these brief capsules is definitely a good idea, especially since if I go in with a title in mind it would otherwise constrain the subject too much and that is something I want to avoid. There isn't really much time for subject to wander, which I suppose is another part of the appeal for me of this exercise.

And that's five minutes.
