May 04, 2008 My Failings As A Maker

In writing about Eccentric Cubicle I may have given the erroneous impression that I am one of these improvisational inventors. I am not.

In point of fact, I am far too concerned with preserving the original materials for a Maker-like hack to ever get down to the experimentation needed to learn such a craft. That doesn't mean I won't have a go at some of the fun stuff, but my creations will never match the serendipitous power of what kaden Harris makes.

I wonder if this attachment to the original artifact is what attracts me to software. Computer code is infintely malleable ("software has no physics", to quote a co-worker), but more importantly it is very easy to back up before you start breaking things.

Still, I am hankering after a tap and die set and some thread gauges. I have almost no hope of fitting a table saw or dedicated drill press into the workshop.
