My work on the vampire novel (currently called "Eye Teeth") has lost momentum rather. I got to the end of a chapter talking about Marcus Tyburn's back story and then just couldn't get going on the next chapter. It's like I just ran out of steam. Some of it is undoubtedly stress (long project list at home, lots to do at work...), but I am also much less interested in the chapter I am writing now than some of the others.
I had hoped to regain some energy on the California trip last weekend but I had much less time to myself than I had expected and so it just didn't happen. I've barely written anything in two weeks now.
So last night I printed out the current state of the manuscript. Even double sided I am quite surprised to report that it's about the same size as the laptop it was written on: 186 sheets of paper, almost an inch thick. Never mind the quality, feel the width.
The plan is to read it again from the beginning, partly to reconnect with the story and partly to do some editing and annotation. See how a bit of red pen helps to get the blood flowing.
I do know that I am going to have to adjust my goals. It is quite clear that I am not going to have the second draft complete by the end of June now, not with everything else going on too.

I know how that feels. But -- unlike the first draft -- it's not as if there's a hard deadline. Sometimes you just have to let things lie for a little bit. Hand them off to a background process.
