Unfortunately, it transpires that I do not have the right tools to fix my broken spoke. The block removal tool I have is out of date.

I also discovered that the hub is not sealed, and that I am an incompetent fool when it comes to dismantling hubs. The upshot is: do not put a greasy axle down on a sawdust covered bench!

Still, it turns out that the grinding and crunching was from pitted cones rather than sawdust, but...

I should be picking up the new, improved, actually working wheel this evening.
