March 16, 2005 Running Out

I am a runner.

I've run (or at least mostly not walked) a marathon, two half marathons, and any number of training runs.

But I haven't been running much lately. The knee injury after the marathon and crippling exhaustion from the ulcer have stopped me running regularly since November last year. I ran exactly once while we were in Britain. It was a nice run over familiar ground, but it was too hard for me to keep going. My aerobic conditioning is shot.

And now the back pain from the crappy seat on our flight from Newark is causing me further difficulties. I tried running on Friday last week, and that was disastrous. A twanging galf was one thing since it could be stretched out, but then my back started complaining. It was like last years's rib injury - incessant and incorrigible.

At least I can still cycle, and with the longer days it is becoming less dangerous to commute by bike again. Riding in this morning for the second time this week it already feels like my aerobic capacity is getting back to reasonable levels.

With any luck it will also help me to feel a bit less like a fat bastard.

So - yes, I am a runner, but I was a cyclist first.
