January 31, 2005 Character Building

I made a somewhat lacklustre start to the rewrite for "The Vampire Hunter" this weekend.

I've got three initial tasks to complete before I get writing again:

1. scene cards, so I reorganise things more easily with a clearer overview of the story structure

2. timeline cards - what happens when which has an effect on the story

3. character cards - who the players in the story are.

I need to do the last because... well, one of the comments I have had is that a central character changes quite quickly from one chapter to the next. I realised that not only did I not know this character very well, but that a throwaway character who appears for exactly one scene is better drawn.

Unfortunately writing character cards is dull.

I've been writing some character sketches instead, little vignettes which illuminate a fragment of a character outside the story. I've been pleased with those. They're not boring to write either, which is nice. I don't think they are everything I need, but at least they give me something more creative to do than filing.
