January 28, 2005 A Big Draw

The best drawing tool I have ever used is !Draw, one of the applications that came with RISCOS on my Acorn Archimedes.

!Draw was a vector drawing tool with lines, fill colour, text, grid locking, and grouping. It wasn't the best because it had the most features, but because it had the right features and because they fitted together right. The three button mouse on the Arc helped: left to select, right to adjust/multi-select, centre to bring up the menu. But the way the tool worked was so smooth... I also had an extra tool called (I think) FontFX which did some very neat font tricks which could then be pasted into !Draw files, and that made the package complete.

Not that I am by any means a great graphic artist, but I do have a visual imagination and !Draw was the tool that allowed me to express that imagination most effectively.

I am still looking for a free tool which even comes close. The KDE tool wasn't bad, but it was very unstable when I used it last. Others that I've managed to get running just don't seem to function that well.

What I really want is !Draw, and it just isn't out there.
