We had our first prenatal appointment yesterday with the midwife. I am going to try and go along to as many of these as I can.
This first appointment was mostly paperwork and general information, including the discussions about insurance coverage which seem to be inevitable when dealing with the US health care system (if "system" is not too strong a word).
We did get to hear our baby's heartbeat, though. That was amazing.
The midwife showed us this wand-like thing and told us that it was a doppler sonar device. Her simile for finding the baby with it was that it's like using a torch in a darkened room to find someone hiding behind a chair.
Then she placed the wand against Jen's belly and said "Well, this one's not hiding!" And there was the heartbeat, thrashing away as fœtal hearts do.
So there's definitely a person in there, or a protoperson certainly.
Like I say, amazing.

Wow, that's just SO awesome... Congrats again! (I don't know how many times I can say that to you before you tire of hearing it, but there it is, all the same. :)

I've sent you an email along these lines already, but... You end up with a tiny person! Really! You do! A real person! Who relies on you for *everything*. You'll end up spending a good 30% of your time crying for no apparent reason. Anyway - must run - the baby alarm is telling me Iris has just woken up... :-) Laters!
And no matter how old that child is you will continue to have them in your heart and mind.
Your life will never be the same. For me, that change has been wonderful.
