December 16, 2004 "Do You Have Anything Without Spam?"

As I mentioned the other day, Movable Type has been looking shaky as far as my web host is concerned. This is something which the MT developers have been investigating, and today the product manager posted saying that they have patches which they hope will address the load issues.

I am assuming that installing this patch will require MT 3.x, so I have had another look at the licence.

Well, I don't think I can put off upgrading any longer.

One of my reasons for not upgrading thus far is that I was uncertain about the licence terms for the new version, which were changed amidst howls of protest from the denizens of Blogistan. However, it seems that my single-author, single blog usage is well within the bounds of the new licence so there is no reason not to upgrade. And once I do I will almost certainly sign up for TypeKey, which will with any luck prevent pretty much all the spam. This has the cost, I am afraid, of requiring registration for commenters.

I am now waiting for the word from my web host as to whether this pending patch will be enough. Hope to hear on that after the weekend.

Then with any luck I can stop talking about this poisonous subject.

Update: I've been working on some anti-spam measures for my MC servers for a little while now. It's complicated stuff, which is not going quickly. And I've not been doing a good job of zapping any spam which turns up. So as a temporary measure I have simply banned URLs being posted to Orange MC and the Lockisseum.

Very far from the ideal solution, but it'll do for now. Better than having rude people shouting in the game rooms.
