A strange thing for me to post about, but listening to the BBC news from earlier in the day I hear that the furniture store Courts has gone out of business.
I have to say that my immediate reaction is "Good."
I went into Courts maybe three times, and it was always a dismal and depressing experience. This was years ago when they were still a nominally successful store and were still hiring Bruce Forsythe to do their advertising. But the thing that really made me think that Courts were going to go crash was when I actually tried to order something.
What we needed at the time was a wardrobe. One of the bedrooms had just been decorated, and we needed something new to put clothes in since we'd dismantled the very badly constructed built-ins.
So, off to Courts. There was a pretty decent looking wardrobe in the store at a fair price, and a salesman was eventually flagged down.
It was going to take ten weeks to deliver.
That's unacceptable. We actually bought the wardrobe from a local pine furniture store where they had what we wanted in stock, but we could have gone to IKEA, even MFI for pity's sake.
Honestly, I am more surprised that Courts have been in business for so long rather than that they have gone bust now.
So yes, I am sympathetic to those who have lost money to Courts because of this, but honestly - it was about time. They were crap.
