The 50,000th word was "must".
Final total: 50,008 words. I almost made to the end of the word count on the plot I had. I hit 49,400-ish when I wrote "THE END" in centred bold letters at the bottom of the last page, and then went back to add some filler in the middle of the week I missed out. There is more to go in there, of course, but at least I got to the right word count for now.
I was worried I might not finish today, which was always my target date, because work intruded more than I would have liked. I spent all of Friday evening arsing about with bad code instead of writing, and got no writing done yesterday either, so it was with a certain amount of desperation that I finally put finger to keyboard at five o'clock or so this evening. And it all went very smoothly - the words flowed nicely, the dénouement was sufficiently gothic (albeit with rather too much conversation which will have to move earlier on), and even the filler was easy to write.
And now it's over. Wow.
I have printed the whole thing out and it is languishing in a drawer waiting for me to pick it up six weeks' time and read it properly, and critically. That's pretty much exactly New Year's Day, which is one of the pleasing bits of happenstance I have enjoyed in quite a while! If only I had remembered to run spell check before I hit print.
Oh well. It is still a good day.
