I've been working a bit more on the characters for my novel and I realised that the lead character was (1) uninteresting and (2) not going to be hired by the people central to the plot. So, a new name, some more background on who this guy is, and a new location.

One obvious hole is that this story was supposed to start in San Francisco. There was not in fact any particular reason for this, so I've moved the start point to Portland because at least I know something about this city (I have been to San Francisco, but only once and that was seven years ago).

Unfortunately, the tool gathering is not going so well. I'm still having problems getting fink to talk to X on ithaqua, so I can't install the tools I want. I am at the point of just junking the fink install and starting again from the beginning, since I can't spend much more time on this really. I need to spend time getting the writing together rather than puttering about making the cimputer work properly.

Still, I can always just write text.
