It is taking me a good deal longer to reconstruct my laptop ithaqua than I had expected.
My data backups were sound, but the application backups have failed. I didn't backup my config thoroughly enough either.
So, I've got a number of problems to deal with:
1. restoring two years of config tweaks, things like remembering how to change the name of my machine, how to install Perl modules from CPAN, and so on.
2. finding the software I want to run in versions that will run on ithaqua - I have OS X 10.2 on ithaqua, and a surprising number of tools are only now available to run on 10.3. Given how near the release of the next version of OS X is, I really don't want to spend the money for an upgrade to 10.3 now...
3. getting X to run - this is largely a consequence of the software version issue, but... there are a goodly number of tools which I run under X11, however I am having big difficulties getting fink to install usable X libraries alongside the version of Apple's X server which I have available.
It's a bit of a palaver, and I didn't take any notes when I was first setting this stuff up two years ago, which is a rather tragic error.
Well, I'll get there. It's just time I could have done without losing.
