This is the time of year when I start to feel really sour: the holiday season.
It's the shops that do it. I don't mind people celebrating because after all that's what people do. I celebreate myself sometimes. But somehow I find the commercialisation of these festivals insupportable - the tat, the pressure to buy, the crowds.
I am such a joyless old curmudgeon.
Last year I wrote about how Halloween wasn't scary enough here in the US. This year it's Halloween getting in another low blow with the inflatable figure I saw in the supermarket yesterday: a nine foot tall illuminated Tigger, dressed in a vampire costume. Somehow the rafts of special edition Halloween sweeties strewn around the place didn't irk me quite as much.
What is there to be scared of here?

... or Snickers. But more about that in the race report.
