August 06, 2004 Yog Sothoth Apparating

I used to do a lot of model painting, back in the days when I was doing a good deal of role playing. I was not hugely good at it, but it was something I enjoyed in my plodding, rather unimaginative way.

I had an idea a few years ago for a diorama which I would like to make, one where Yog Sothoth is appearing in response to the summons of a magician. The scene would show the summoner, arms raised, and his disciples (or perhaps "cultitsts" would be more appropriate a term!) gathered on a mound overlooking a river valley. The night sky would be open above them, and there is a tear in the sky, a rent in the fabric of space time through which the Great Old One is flowing.

I had some quite intricate ideas about how to represent the apparating deity, with multiple marbles and iridescent spheres of differing sizes. The point was that it should look like Yog Sothoth is pouring through the hole, like foam from an overflowing washing machine.

This would also be a good candidate for a rendered scene, something to draw with POVRAY or some other ray tracing software. Indeed, this last is a good deal more likely than the modelling, but it's so long since I've done any of this and my skills in those areas are so atrophied that it's best to just say I'll get to it sometime never.
