July 22, 2004 Hot

40 mins/39:05 (3½ miles)

Bumped into a lot of runners this morning who usually go out later in the day but who had the same idea as we did of trying to get the miles in while the heat was still more or less bearable. It was still pretty brutal even so. Warm and humid: lovely weather, but murder for running in (at least for those of use raised in northern latitudes). Very glad of the shade on the route this morning.

Unfortunately, my legs were still pretty tired from cycling and yoga yesterday so I struggled to run with any kind of pace. I pushed it a little too hard on the bike coming home to see if I could test my theories on what my heart rate was doing while I was riding. I had interesting results, but my legs could have done with less stress.

For what it's worth, I had thought that my heart rate was higher while I was biking than running. This proved to be both right and wrong - my heart rate going up hills peaked higher than it does when I am running (~178 vs 176 on foot), but my base heart rate stabilises at a lower level for a perceived level of effort which is equivalent (160 vs ~165). I do not know what any of this means, except that I haven't done any of the measurements or calculations that I had meant to.

Since I won't be running on Saturday with PFit, we're doing a longish run tomorrow. We'll be going out earlier than today, although we'll see whether that actually helps or not in terms of the temperature given that I doubt the heat will dissipate much overnight.

Well, I wanted heat training!
