July 20, 2004 Hill Start

20 mins/45:34 (3½ miles)

Gods, but it felt good to move again.

I was still creaky yesterday after Saturday's overlength run and furniture moving extravaganza, but running this morning was sheer joy. Started slowly of course, but the fairly gentle hills on our route through Hillsdale were just what was needed to loosen up the limbs once more.

And my heart rate was unexpectedly low today: it didn't get above 160 on the shallower hills, and peaked at 176 on the very steepest section (ignoring the rogue reading of 227, which alarmed me for a moment!), whereas on Saturday my pulse was bumping up to 170 even on fairly gentle hills early in the proceedings. I suspect that I have been consistently overtraining, so that I may well find my pulse recovering better as I keep it lower on the long runs.

Which would be nice.

I've borrowed a pamphlet on heart rate training from my ultra-running friend, so we'll see how things go.
