July 14, 2004 Spoiled

Part of the difficulty with having dealt with such a good builder for the construction on our downstairs project is that we are spoiled for dealing with anyone who doesn't work as well.

The lino installers turned up more or less on time yesterday and proceeded to lay the flooring. The floor has been laid pretty well, although one seam is in a less than ideal place. Indeed, my first impression of the floor when I got home yesterday evening was quite positive. I wasn't too bothered about the damage to the doorframes; this often happens when installing flooring.

However, this was after Jen and her mother (who was visiting) had been scrubbing the floor for an hour. The installers had swept, but they had left a great many sticky black marks (either adhesive or primer) and other blobs of stuff on the lino. In other words, they had installed the flooring but seemed to have made a good effort at destroying it in the process.

At least the marks came off.

The wall edging which was to be installed at the same time was not so well done, though. There was a lot of adhesive which had been smeared on the face of it, and it wasn't very well sealed to the wall in any case - granted that these sections were where the wall was roughest, but still.

But the pièce de resistance was in the bathroom, just alongside the bathroom sink cabinet. Jen had a lot of fun with me here, sending me into the bathroom to see if I could spot it:

The "What the hell is that?!" shot.
An overhead view. You can see here that the flooring has not been laid at all into this gap, and then they laid wall edging across the front!

We're still pretty much incredulous that these clowns thought this could be acceptable.

Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures to hand of the rest of the floor, which is a shame because it looks very nice and feels really nice to walk on, even in bare feet. But the general state of things once the installers had finished their rush job leaves a sour taste.
