June 29, 2004 Terwilliger

Terwilliger Boulevard is pretty much the sine qua non of hilly roads around Portland, as I have revealed already by the way I was surprised when we didn not do Terwilliger for a hill run a couple of weeks ago.

The hill runs we've been doing on Tuesday mornings have been equally surprising, then, in that there's been no Terwilliger-ness to them either, even though it's actually quite near by.

Zee proposed a new route this morning, though, which had us trundling up Terwilliger at the end of a two mile out stretch. But again, Terwilliger was an anticlimax - we'd already run up some much steeper hills to get to Terwilliger before its rolling tarmac hoved into view, and walked part of the uphill to boot, and so it was rather a disappointment to tell the truth.

Don't get me wrong - Terwilliger can be a challenging run, because it is such a long road and all of it is hilly, but its rep is a little overblown. Yes it's steep in spots, but there are other much steeper hills around that area - arguably, the hardest thing about Terwilliger is getting to it!

Tuesday morning hill runs are a bit of a fixture for me now, though. I like running hills.
