June 03, 2004 Heat

30 mins/36:22 (3½ miles)

Warm today. Not really hot, but it's definitely warmer than I am used to running in.

Part of my problem may be that I grew up a lot further north than I am living now: Ilkley is at 54° N, Portland is about 45°N. I also spend a lot of time hiding indoors or in my car where there is air conditioning, so my mechanisms for dealing with heat are atrophied. So overall, I need to relearn running for when it's hot. I love cycling when it's hot, but running really is harder.

This was a painful lesson from a year ago. The twelve miler at this point in the training last season was on a warm day. I was in trouble with my knee and my over-tiring gait in any case, but I really suffered with the heat. A lot of it is getting the pace right and I set off too fast last year (and this morning for that matter...), but just getting used to running when it's warmer is a difficult thing.

I'm very glad I've got my hat because that helps a lot, but I'm also very relieved that the forecast is for a relatively cool rainy day on Saturday.
