June 01, 2004 A Stitch In Time

14x30-30/37:01 (3½ miles)

When I'm running during the week from work, I usually try to run at about ten in the morning. This is early enough not to disrupt the day too much, but late enough to get some stuff done beforehand.

Unfortunately, today was not a day when I could run at ten. Usually this is down to meetings, but today was just maleficent airs which left mee feeling very frustrated. So I ran in late morning, but after I'd eaten my lunch.

Also I had skipped last week's speed session because I was so tired after yoga on Monday, so was slightly worried about this week's session since it was so much more intense than the last one I did.

The warm up before the intervals proper went smoothly enough, and so did the first few intervals, but after the first ten I started to develop a stitch in my right side. The short thirty second intervals made it possible to keep going through the stitch, but it was a slightly sour end to the session. I'm pretty sure this was down to my eating within an hour of running, which was a bit stupid.

A good run overall, though. I'm feeling more energised this afternoon than enervated, and a good deal less frustrated (despite the airs being no less maleficent) than I was this morning.

"Muscle is denser than fat."

Well, that's what I used to tell myself, anyway, back when I had any muscle development going on. Certainly weight isn't a direct correlation to fitness, which is a much more important consideration.

Thanks for at least repeating what I say to myself!

The fact of the matter is that it's very difficult to both train for a marathon and lose weight at the same time. The training burns a lot of energy, but you need to maintain that energy level rather than trying to use up fat. Indeed, I think a lot of the tiredness I've suffered has been from not eating enough to stay awake.

THere's no doubt that I am still quite overweight, but at the same time I'm a great deal fitter than most!
