Dave the contractor turned up this morning on time, slightly early even, which was a relief. Not that we were worried that he wouldn't arrive, but it's reassuring all the same. Well, it was reassuring after we had recovered from our initial alarm when we heard the garage door opening!
First job is to rip off all the hideous panelling, and then the HVAC guy should be along today to dismantle the old furnace. We will be without heat for the next couple of days, but this is acceptable since it is May (although it's been cooler the last few days, rather typically). Last time we were without heat during a furnace replacement it was November, it was a cold snap, and the furnace was out for five weeks.
Actually, that's an interesting observation - this entire project will take as long as it took for us to get the oil furnace replaced at the old house.
We've had a lot of people asking us whether we are doing this work ourselves. My stock answer has been that if we were doing this ourselves we would be looking at five years rather than five weeks.
As I say, then, we'll be without heat until Wednesday. We are expecting to get a more detailed schedule from Dave as well, so that we have some idea when and for how long we're going to be without a washing machine, which is much more onerous than the heat!
I'll pop some pictures up later on about how the first day has gone. I've had a report from Jen that it's been noisy, though.
