May 01, 2004 Seven Miles: Bugger

7 miles/1:16:12

Just a pig of a run today. It's not that it was longer than last week, because I was vastly more tired at three miles than I was after six last Saturday, but there was just something profoundly broken in my prep or my attitude or something.

I died on my arse. I hate it when that happens.

I did manage to keep going, mostly (I had one 30 second walk at about the five mile mark), although my pace was obviously well down: I ran just under 11 minute miles (10:53, roughly), and I was overtaken by most of the run/walkers too. I really was right at the back of the pack.

But - and it is a big but - there is none of the knee or ankle pain I suffered last season. It was a year ago that I finally connected persistent ankle pain with the Adidas A3s I had mistakenly bought, and it was the nine miler 51 weeks ago that first signalled what turned out to be an utterly debilitating knee injury. I have a good feeling about this.

All I need to do now is not have too many more runs like today.
