March 31, 2004 Overdoing It

The Portland Fit link in the Links section should be earning its keep again soon, since the marathon training season is almost upon me once more. The first sign up session was over the weekend just gone but of course we were away; second sign up session is on Saturday.

My response to this imminent training is to try and step up the pace a bit - today would normally be a day to cycle to work. Well, I still cycled, but I ran too.

I was very surprised at how well the run went, though. It was one of our regular routes through the local nature park, and I was actually pushing the pace a lot more than I do on non-cycling days. I can only assume that this was because I was already warmed up and used to moving my legs fast. It's a 3½ mile route, and things were going really well for the first three miles, but I completely lost it over the last half mile. I was still running, but not with any pace or conviction.

And now it's three in the afternoon and I'm still not dead. Indeed, I feel better than I have for a good while.

We will of course see exactly how well another nine mile rude uphill goes this evening.

I just hope that I can figure out what causes the occasional bouts of super-tiredness... don't much fancy my training being disrupted by a sudden need to sleep for twelve hours and sit in a zombie-like state instead of doing anything useful.
