I need to reorganise my work area in the garage.
We got a tool chest last week which holds all the tools, or at least all the loose tools, but I still need a proper workbench which I can use to mount my vice on. I've got a design, and need to translate it into some more complete drawings.
I've also been looking at some workbench designs in some carpentry books, but they are way over the top for want I want, both in terms of features and the craftsmanship required to put them together! Some ideas to borrow, though.
My biggest worry with the bench I have drawn out now is that it is both ludicrously over-engineered, and toweringly ugly. It's mostly going to be constructed out of 2"x6" timber at the moment, which I think is fine for some parts (eg the worksurface) but seems ridiculous for some others.
The one thing I do know is that I am no carpenter and that I will be using very simple overlap joints and big screws at every opportunity.
18-Mar-2004 well, I put together a workbench. I have a journal and lots of photos to write up my efforts, but it has a 3'x6' work surface, my vice mounted jauntily on one corner, an under-surface shelf for temporary tool storage, and a floor-level shelf for tool storage. It's also phenomenally heavy, since as I mentioned above I tend towards heftiness in construction rather than subtlety.
The work area still needs to be reorganised, however.
