October 27, 2003 Attic Projects

Now that we are in a new house, we have found that we have what can only be characterised as lamentably poor television reception from our little portable aerial. Given the tiny amount of telly which we watch, this would probably be acceptable except for the fact that the one channel which we care about is one of the fuzziest: it's far too hard for us to see Star Trek. What's worse is that we can't video it, because the video's tuner can't get a strong enough signal to record anything but fuzz.

So, since cable is not something we want to buy, we need to install an aerial in the roof space1.

There are a few other things which need doing in the attic while we're at it:

  • lay boards for a crawl way - the attic is full of loose insulation at the moment, which makes seeing where the next limb goes in the necessary totter from joist to joist rather hard. The roof is also quite low-pitched, so there is in fact not much room to stand which makes wandering around up there without some kind of flooring a lot harder. Since two of the projects actually need to be at the far end of the roof space from the access hatchway, there are a fair few boards to lay...
  • fix kitchen hood vent - the vent from the extractor fan over the cooker vents out through the roof. The vent was held up with string. The string has broken. Time for some duct tape instead.
  • fix roof space fan - there is a temperature-sensitive fan at one end of the roof space which is intended to vent the hot air that builds up on a warm day, but while the temperature sensor seems to be OK the fan is jammed (probably either something blocking the blades, or a worn out bearing). You can hear this jammed fan buzzing in the living room. So, need to either fix it or disconnect it.

[1] we could of course put the aerial on the roof, but we'd really rather not have an ugly nest of wires disfiguring the house. And I'm very nervous about trampling around up there, but that's nothing to do with it.

24-Nov-2003 - finished this now.
