May 31, 2003 Going Short

8 miles/5 miles (49:21)
month total: 79 miles

Today was supposed to be the second of the Terwilliger Boulevard hill training sessions, but I ran a short flat route up and down the waterfront instead - enough to get the blood moving, but not so much as to overstress my leg.

Another reason to go for a short run was that the queue at the medical tent was more sane with getting there early... I spoke to the medical folks and they basically said that my doctor's advice was sound, but that it didn't really address the question of why my ankle and knee are out of whack in the first place. I'm going to visit the clinic early next week and get some upper leg massage done, since that seems quite a likely root cause for odd pains in the lower leg what with the possibility of alignment issues and other such entertainments. If that doesn't fix things, then it might be time for some more intense diagnostic work.

I'm beginning to worry that I might have to skip the Helvetia Half Marathon... the run is in three weeks, and my leg is sore. I've had to drop an 8 mile hill session today, and I'm looking at the 12 mile run next week with some alarm. Overall, I'm worried.

See how it goes, really. If I have to skip Helvetia, then at least I'll be in stronger shape to work up to the marathon itself.

The final point is about the month total. This is the furthest I've run in a month by some way, and I'm really delighted that I'm in the physical shape I'm in right now (injuries aside, of course). This is as fit as I've been for something like ten or twelve years, and it's great!
