May 27, 2003 On Running When I Shouldn't

25 mins/28:37 (3 miles)

I really shouldn't have run today: my leg was stiff and sore, and it took a lot of stretching to get it mobile enough to even think about hobbling out of the door, but as I have related elsewhere I really needed to get moving because I was going completely insane with not running.

I would love to say that as soon as I started running that the pain just vanished and my woes lifted from my brow, but I would be lying. I was still limping along after two or three minutes and it really was only once the big muscles in my legs warmed up and got the blood flowing that my gait became less uneven and more comfortable. I ran my three miles pretty easily, and in fact I do feel a lot calmer and less inclined to scream in fury at any moment, but I feel a bit of a fool for stressing my leg when it doesn't really need that.

I have iced the side of the knee and the base of calf where t jions the Achilles tendon, and it feels much better. For now, at any rate...

And finally, I have got to the end of my gel sample frenzy and can reveal that Hammergel Apple Cinnamon is really quite pleasant. However, the consistency is too runny, which made it hard to get out of the pack. I can see it would be downright difficult to eat on the run. Summary results to follow.
