April 22, 2003 Marathon Training

Since I now have a running plan, I'm replacing the old entry with this one which relates more to the goal.

My goal is to run in the Portland Marathon on the first Sunday in October, and to that end I have joined Portland Fit.

At the moment I am in the Red group, which has a nominal pace of 10 minutes per mile plus. This is a bit of a border line case since I am capable of running 8 minute miles over three miles, but that is not a comfortable pace for me over any longer distance and the goal with the training groups is to work a a pace which you can keep up over long periods (after all, at 6mph a marathon will take in excess of four hours).

I'll update this entry with major events, but training notes will be in a new category of "Marathon".

28-Apr-2003: I've decided to switch groups from Red to Yellow following Saturday's run (when I was late for the Red group and found I was comfortable running Yellow), and a successful training session today where I comfortably matched nominal Yellow pace. I just felt more comfortable with the Yellow group on Saturday, somehow...
