January 09, 2003 Running Plan

I had a simple running plan last year which got me going, but I need something more sophisticated now. This is partly to do with wanting to round out my fitness programme in preparation for marathon training, but also to stop me getting stale (which I did a little towards the end of last year, although that was partly because my shoes were worn out).

So, I will need a plan incorporating:

  • some weight training - not to build up too much muscle, just to condition what there is. Apparently this can help both with performance and injury prevention
  • some flexibility training - I am woefully inflexible, so some stretching and yoga would be a good idea
  • some other aerobic exercise - well, this is fairly easy: cycling. I'm a cyclist originally (I have the quads to prove it) so I'll get the bike usable by putting some new pedals on it, and possibly try one of those roller stands, and get spinning.

The first job, though, is to build up my weekly miles (I should be putting down fifteen miles a week by the end of January), then work on some speed and hill training to extend my range more.

[edit 22-Apr-2003: I have a running plan now, so I'm taking this off the active list]
