November 27, 2002 "ithaqua"

The iBook, or rather "ithaqua", is coming along - I still need to use the old machine, dagon, for the minute until I've managed the data transfer. I've had some problems mounting NFS volumes, which I think is more an issue with my understanding of NFS than anything else. Probably sort it out on Friday.

ithaqua has a DVD player built in, but it is resolutely region locked (those with hacks to get around this have been legally prevented from distributing them). So's the one on the PS2. However, there are DVDs I would really like to get from the UK - well, mainly collections of TV programmes I liked, of course, such as Ultraviolet - I would like to have the option. So I've been looking at a couple of places in the US that sell code free DVD players.

The other thing I'm going to be doing on ithaqua is sound editing. I've done very little sound work on any computer because mostly the hardware has been pretty crap on the machines I've bought (less so on azathoth since it has a SoundBlaster Live! card, but that's the best I've got). And then of course sound support under Linux is often not great because the chipset makers are not very open with their specs.

ithaqua has nice sound support though, so I can get on and digitise some of my analogue recordings. One Free package which looks very promising in this direction is Audacity.

Lots to play with.
